1. Ole Miss – Spring Visit Day
Ole Miss will have their Spring Visit Day on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Check in time begins at 8:00 a.m. at the tent in front of Martindale Center. High school and community college students and parents are invited to Ole Miss for a campus wide open house. Please see the poster on Mrs. Ross’ door for more details.

2. Alcorn State University Cheerleader Tryouts
Alcorn State University will host their cheerleader tryouts/clinic workshop Thursday – Saturday, April 10 – 12, 2008. Tryouts will be on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Students who would like more information should see Mrs. Ross as soon as possible.

3. Mississippi Valley State University High School Day
MS Valley State University will host their annual spring high day on April 11, 2008. Students must pre-register by calling 1-800-844-6885.

4. Ebony Pearls Foundation Scholarship
The Ebony Pearls Foundation Scholarship awards deserving students with scholarships up to $3,000 to attend the HBCU of their choice. Guidelines:
· Must enroll in an HBCU as a full time student for the first semester of their freshman year
· Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
· Must attend the Foundation’s interview in business attire
· Must attend the award reception

5. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Scholarship
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Scholarship, Incorporated, Beta Delta Omega Chapter, provides four scholarships to qualified seniors in the Jackson area. The scholarships are awarded to high achieving students who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University. Students must:
· Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher
· School and Community Service
· Verification of acceptance to a Historically Black College or University.
Please see Mrs. Ross for an application. The deadline is April 4, 2008.

June 14, 2008 will be the last time that the ACT will be given before you start college in the fall. Now is the time to begin signing up for this test. 1. National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Scholarship
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Central MS Chapter is looking for graduating seniors who:
· Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
· Have participated in community service activities
· Have leadership potential
· Have writing ability
· Plan to attend a Historically Black College or University. Applications are available in Mrs. Ross’ office. The deadline to apply is March 19, 2008

2. Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Educational Scholarship
The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Educational Scholarship Program is soliciting applications for the 2008-2009 school year. Graduating high school seniors who have a minimum GPA of 2.5 are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The application includes:
· Reside and attend school/college in the Second Congressional District
· Submit a sealed official high school transcript with application
· An acceptance letter from the college where the student will enroll in the fall of 2008.
· Write one (1) personal statement (500 words or more). Make sure your responses covers content related to the three (3) questions that they ask you
· Provide a completed financial statement
· Submit two letters of recommendation
· Submit a recent photograph suitable for publication.

3. Champions for Children Scholarship
Students who have mentored young children for 100 or more hours this year (Boys and Girls Club, Gary Road Intermediate School, Byram Middle School, etc.) qualify to apply for the Champions for Children Scholarship. Remember, the essay that you write about your mentoring experiences will count as 75% of your score on the application. Please see Mrs. Ross as soon as possible if you have not already received your scholarship packet. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2008.


4. Freshman Art Scholarship – Hinds Community College
The Freshman Art Scholarships provide an opportunity for Art students to receive financial assistance based primarily on artistic merit. There will be a limited number of partial or full tuition scholarships awarded to deserving students. The deadline for receipt of application materials for the Art Department Scholarships is March 14, no later than 3:30. Please see Mrs. Ross as soon as possible for an application. 5. Lion’s Club Scholarship
The Lion’s Club will award a $1,000 scholarship to a senior at THS who has participated in school and community activities and plans to attend a community college next year. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application as soon as possible. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 13th.

6. Junior Auxiliary of Byram-Terry, Inc. Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to seniors who plan to major in a field related to the special needs of children, such as: elementary education, early childhood development, pediatric nursing, mental health, counseling, hearing/visually impaired, social work, etc. The scholarship amount is $500 and will be awarded to a senior from Terry High School or Hillcrest Christian School. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application. The scholarship committee must receive all applications no later than April 7, 2008.

7. Art Merit Awards – Ole Miss
High school seniors are encouraged to compete for the undergraduate Art Merit Scholarship on Spring Visit Day. The prestigious award is a great addition to a resume, along with a small stipend each semester. If you are unable to attend the event, you may send your application packet to: Art Merit, Department of Art, University of MS, University, MS 38677. To ensure consideration, mailed applications must arrive by March 14, 2008. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application.

8. JSU – Information Expo
Jackson State University will sponsor a Get Ready “Class of 2008” Information Expo on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from 10:00 – 2:00 at the College of Business Bldg. Students have the opportunity to learn more about scholarships, financial, aid, dorm rooms, admissions, ROTC, and much more. Mississippi Grant and Scholarship Programs

Applications for the MTAG, MESG, HELP, Nissan Scholarships, and many more can be found at www.mississippi.edu. Click on Financial Aid (which is the 6th pick in the list on the left). Below you will find four examples of financial aid that is available on this website.


MTAG – Mississippi Resident Tuition Assistance Grant Program
· Must be a resident of Mississippi for one year prior to enrollment
· Must attend university or college in Mississippi full-time
· Available to all majors
· Receive less than the full Federal Pell Grant as determined by the completion of the FAFSA
· Must have 2.5 GPA and 15 ACT
· Award dependent on availability of funds and may be prorated
· Maximum grant per academic year:
· $500 – freshmen & sophomores
· $1,000 – juniors & seniors
· Application Deadline: September 15th.


MESG – Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant Program
· Must be a resident of Mississippi for one year prior to enrollment in college
· Must attend university or college in Mississippi full-time
· Available to all majors
· First time freshmen must have a cumulative 3.50 GPA
· Have scored a minimum of 29 on the ACT
· Maximum grant $2,500 per academic year, not to exceed tuition and required fees.
· Application deadline is September 15th.


HELP – Higher Education Legislative Plan for Needy Students
· Have graduated from high school within the immediate prior
two years.
· Be a resident of MS for two years prior to application

· Complete and return household verification form (used to document additional siblings under the age of 21).
· Must attend university or college in Mississippi full-time
· 2.5 GPA from high school
· 20 ACT
· Parent’s average adjusted income cannot exceed $36,500 for the past two years- a higher average adjusted gross income may be applicable depending on family demographics.
· Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the completion of the FAFSA
· Have completed the specific high school core curriculum.
· Deadline to apply is April 30th.


Nissan Scholarship
· Nissan North America, Inc. provides scholarship funds for applicants that will attend a public two-year college or public four-year college.
· Must have GPA of 2.5 or higher
· Must have ACT of 20 or higher
· Demonstrate leadership through extra-curricular activities
· Be nominated by an educator and a community leader
· Write an essay on an assigned topic
· Deadline to apply is March 1st.

1. Central MS Ole Miss Alumni Club Scholarship
Students who plan to attend Ole Miss next year and would like to be considered for an Alumni Scholarship should see Mrs. Ross as soon as possible. In order to apply, you must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and a score of 21 – 28 on the ACT. The deadline to sign up in Mrs. Ross’ office is Friday, February 22, 2008.

2. Rotary Mentor Scholarship Program
This college scholarship program is a maximum $12,000 total grant, payable at up to $3,000 per year for four years. There are a number of other factors you should know about the scholarship:
· Must have an ACT score of 18 or higher
· Must be in a household where the combined family income does not exceed $60,000 per year
· Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
· Must attend a college, university, junior college or community college in Mississippi
· Must provide some type of community service such as mentoring in an elementary school for a minimum of four hours weekly while in college
· Must have a mentor from the Rotary Club of Jackson each year
· Must attend at least one meeting of the Rotary Club of Jackson to report on your activities for the year
· Must attend the Rotary Club luncheon meeting on Monday, June 9, 2008.

3. April ACT
The deadline to apply for the April ACT is Friday, March 7, 2008. Packets are available in Mrs. Ross’ office and the mail office. Students are also encouraged to apply on line by going to www.actstudent.org. The code for Terry High School is 251-375.

4. ACT Workshop
Sylvan Learning Center, located on Lakeland Dr., is hosting an ACT workshop. Workshops will begin on March 2nd for the April test. Call 601-919-2455 to make a reservation and get more information on cost, times, etc.

5. Mississippi Summer Developmental Program Grant
Students who do not meet the criteria for admission to one of the state’s public universities are nonetheless eligible. Such students may be required to enroll in the summer semester with mandatory participation in the Summer Developmental Program. Grants are now available to assist Mississippi residents participating in the Mississippi Summer Development Program. For more information, go to www.mississippi.edu and click on Financial Aid. 6. Bumpers Drive-In 2008 Discover Mississippi Scholarship Contest
Bumpers Drive-In is hosting a scholarship contest offering more than $45,000 in prizes and scholarships! This year they will be awarding two $10,000 scholarships along with a scholarship for $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000, plus six $2,000 regional scholarships. Five additional $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who are in attendance at the April 19th drawing.

The contest is open to all MS juniors and seniors. Winners will be selected in a random drawing, and the scholarships may be used at any accredited junior or senior college. All students who complete the contest requirements and have a Qualifying Receipt will receive 52 FREE Bumpers Drive-In meals.

In order to participate you must first pick up a Bumpers Scholarship Contest “passport” and contest rules at any of the 32 Bumpers Drive-In locations. You can also get more information by going to www.bumpersdrivein.com. Once the passport has been stamped by 12 different Bumpers Drive-In locations, turn the passport in at any Bumpers Drive-In. The deadline to turn your stamped passport in is March 31, 2008.

The scholarship drawing will be held at Bumpers Drive-In on Lake Harbour Drive on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

1. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY 2008)
The SAMMY 2008 Award Program recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the U.S. with $7,500 scholarships. Judging is based on the following: academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and what role milk plays in their success. Winners will also be offered an invitation to attend a SAMMY 2008 weekend at the Disney World Complex in Orlando, FL and an opportunity to be star in a Milk Mustache ad in USA Today. SAMMY 2008 applications are available online at sammy.bodybymilk.com. The deadline is March 7th.

2. Robert C. Byrd Scholarship
The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded scholarship program. The application requires that students list honors, awards, extracurricular activities, and community service. An essay on “What is the Value of a College Education?” is also required. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application or go to www.mde.k12.ms.us/schilarship/scholdev.html. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2008.

3. Gulf South Pipeline Company Scholarship
High school seniors that are planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study are eligible to apply for this scholarship. One senior at Terry High School is guaranteed to receive a $1,000 scholarship! Requirements:
· Must have a 3.0 GPA
· Must list work experience
· Must list activities, awards, and honors
· Make a brief statement about your goals and aspirations

4. AXA Achievement Community Scholarship
The AXA Achievement Community Scholarship program offers $2,000 scholarships to seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community, or the workplace. Applicants are asked to describe an outstanding long-term achievement they have accomplished in a non-academic activity or project. The achievement needs to be supported by an appraisal completed by an adult who is not related to the applicant. The deadline to apply is February 15, 2008. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application.

5. College Representatives Visit Terry High School
The following college representatives will be in the original cafeteria during 5th period on the following dates:
· Mississippi State University – Monday, February 4, 2008
· Ole Miss Army ROTC – Tuesday, February 5, 2008
· Hinds Community College – Tuesday, February 12, 2008
· William Carey University – Monday, February 25, 2008

A representative from Jackson State University will be in the library on Monday, February 11, 2008 to visit only with the students who have expressed interest in attending JSU next year. We will let you know what time to report to the library for this visit.

6. Hinds Community College
Students who are interested in attending Hinds Community College next year are encouraged to apply for the following scholarships:
· ACT Scholarships – These scholarships are available for students with a composite score of 21 or above on the ACT. Application priority deadline is March 1st. After March 1st, ACT Scholarships are awarded on first-come basis until funds are depleted. ACT Scholarships:
21-24/One-Half Tuition
25-28/Full Tuition
29-Above/Room, Board, and Tuition

ESF and the Jackson Junior League will be hosting FREE ACT Workshops at Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson on February 2nd and April 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Call 601-321-5533 to reserve a spot. Reservations are required to attend.

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Just a reminder that you must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for federal student financial aid and to apply for most state and college aid. All of the necessary information was given to each senior last week. If you need help in completing this form, Educational Services Foundation (ESF) will provide you with one-on-one assistance. For an appointment for this free service, call ESF at 601-321-5533. Students and parents should bring to the appointment:
· Student’s driver’s license & Social Security number
· Both parents’ Social Security numbers and dates of birth
· W-2 Forms & other records of money earned in 2007
· 2007 1040 (Income Tax Return – both parents’ and student’s)
· Untaxed income records (Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare, VA benefits)
· Value of bank accounts and investments

2. Best Buy Scholarship
Any senior who has good grades and has been dedicated to helping in their community, is encouraged to apply for the Best Buy Scholarship. To apply, visit www.bestbuy.com/scholarships. The deadline to apply is February 15, 2008.

3. David G. Hall, M.D. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored by the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. This year they will award one overall scholarship for $1,250 as well as smaller scholarships to other deserving seniors. Applicants are required to complete an application and complete a 500-word essay titled, “The Family Physician: The Heart of Medicine”. The essay should describe the impact of their personal Family Physician in their life and/or the role of the Family Physician in his or her community. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application. Each school can submit only one application. Your application must be returned to Mrs. Ross no later than Friday, February 15th for judging.

4. Rust College – 2008 Visitation Day
Rust College will have a visitation day on Saturday, March 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please see Mrs. Ross for additional information or call 1 (888) 886-8492 Ext. 4059.


5. 2008 Mutual Credit Union Scholarship
Mutual Credit Union will award four $1,000 scholarships to Mutual Credit Union members who are graduating high school seniors in the spring of 2008. Two scholarships will be awarded to students with GPA’s of 3.5 or higher, and two scholarships will be awarded to students with GPA’s between 2.5 and 3.49. Please see Mrs. Ross for an application or visit www.mutualcu.org. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2008.

6. USDA/1890 National Scholars Program
The National Scholars Program offers scholarships to students seeking a bachelor’s degree at one of the eighteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions in any field of study in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or other related disciplines. Applicants must:
· Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
· Have an ACT score of 21 or higher
· Attend one of the eighteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions
· Demonstrate leadership and community service
· Apply for admission to the institution of his/her choice
· Submit an official transcript
The deadline to apply is February 1, 2008. See Mrs. Ross for an application.

7. The Louis Stokes MS Alliance for Minority Participation (LSMAMP)
The LSMAMP is a Summer Bridge Program for minority students who plans to major in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, and technological fields. A complete application consists of:
· Admission to Ole Miss for the 2008 fall semester in science, engineering, or math field (complete list is in Mrs. Ross’ office)
· A completed and signed Summer Bridge Program application
· Transcript
· Two letter of recommendation
· ACT score

8. Luckyday Scholarship/Ole Miss
Students who plan to attend Ole Miss next year and would like to apply for the Luckyday Scholarship should see Mrs. Ross as soon as possible or go to Luckyday@olemiss.edu. Requirements are:
· Apply for admissions to Ole Miss
· ACT score of 20 or higher
· GPA of 3.2 or higher
· Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

1. American Association of Blacks in Energy Scholarship
The American Association of Blacks in Energy seeks to help increase the number of African Americans or Hispanics in energy related fields. Candidates for the AABE scholarship must meet the following eligibility criteria:
· Have an overall “B” academic average and a “B” average in mathematics and science courses.
· Plan to major in engineering, mathematics, or the physical sciences.
· Demonstrate financial need.
Students who are interested in applying for this scholarship, should see Mrs. Ross for an application. The deadline to apply is Friday, February 15, 2008.

2. 2008 Sam Walton Community Scholarship –(NEW Website)
The 2008 Sam Walton Community Scholarship is now available at a NEW Website: www.goonline.cc. The deadline for entry is a postmark of January 14, 2008. This scholarship is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the first year of undergraduate study at an approved accredited college or university.

3. McKelvey Foundation Scholarship
The McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship is available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school. Students are encouraged to apply online at mckelveyfoundation.org. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2008.

Students who are interested in attending Mississippi College next year are invited to attend a reception at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson next Tuesday, December 4, 2007 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.  Please see Mrs. Ross if you need additional information.

 

  1. American Cancer Society Scholarship

The American Cancer Society’s College Scholarship Program gives young cancer survivors the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.  Students who have had a diagnosis of cancer and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply.  Please see Mrs. Ross for an application and more information.  The deadline to apply is February 1, 2008.

 

  1. 2008 ESF Essay Scholarship

The Educational Services Foundation (ESF) has announced the 2008 essay scholarship competition.  Sixty (60) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  The essay topic (500 words maximum):  Create a NEW reality TV show and describe it.  Applications have been passed out in the senior English classes.  Please see Mrs. Ross if you need an additional copy.  The deadline to apply is January 15, 2008.

 

  1. 2008 Sam Walton Community Scholarship

The 2008 Sam Walton Community Scholarship is available through www.walmartfoundation.org.  The deadline for entry is a postmark of January 14, 2008.  This scholarship is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the first year of undergraduate study at an approved accredited college or university.  To qualify, a student must be a graduating high school senior and may not be a Wal-Mart of Sam’s Club associate, or the child or legal dependent of a Wal-Mart of Sam’s Club associate.  See the website for general guidelines and scholarship opportunities for associates and children of associates.

 

 

 

  1. Jackson State University National Alumni Association Scholarship

The Jackson-Hinds Alumni Chapter of the JSU National Alumni Association is delighted to offer seniors who plan to attend JSU the opportunity to apply for and receive a scholarship upon enrollment during the Fall of 2008.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher to apply.  Please see Mrs. Ross as soon as possible for an application.  The deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2008.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. has announced their scholarship program for this year.  This program awards 100 scholarships valued at $10,000 and $20,000.  Our school can nominate one senior for this scholarship.  If you would like to apply, see Mrs. Ross immediately for an application.  The application requires that you list:

  1. Ole Miss – Luckyday Scholarship

Each year Ole Miss awards Luckyday Scholarships ranging from $2000 to $7000 per year.  Luckyday Scholarships are awarded to exemplary students who meet the following requirements.

    • Be admitted to Ole Miss by the priority deadline of March 1.
    • Score 20 or higher on the ACT
    • Have a high school GPA of 3.2 or higher
    • Submit a complete application packet by the priority deadline of February 1.
    • Have remaining financial need after awarding of other scholarships and grants.
    • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Luckyday Foundation Citizenship Scholars Program is now accepting application for 2008.  The program looks for exemplary student candidates who demonstrate self-motivation, high school involvement, servant leadership, and community involvement.  This scholarship provided $1,250 per fall and spring semester renewable for a four year period.  Students who are interested in this program should visit the following web site:  www.usm.edu/luckyday to print an application and learn more about the Luckyday program.  The deadline to apply for the Luckyday Foundation Citizenship Scholars Program is January 5, 2008.

The W.E.B. Du Boise Honors College at JSU is accepting applications for  scholarships for the 2008 – 2009 academic year.  Requirements are a minimum ACT score of 21 and a strong “B” average.  The deadline to apply for a scholarship is February 15th and the deadline to apply for the Honors College is August 15th.

Students who plan to participate in sports at a 4-year university (Division I or II Institutions) next year need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse.  To register online, please follow the directions listed below:

    • Click on” Prospective Student-Athletes” which will link you to the necessary information to apply.

Be sure that you follow all of the instructions, including printing a copy of the two (2) release forms to give to Mrs. Ross. The code for THS is 251-375.

 

  1. Burger King Scholarship

Burger King is sponsoring $1,000 scholarships for eligible high school seniors.  Log on at www.bk.com/scholars to apply.  You must:

    • Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
    • Work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year
    • Be actively involved in community service activities
    • Demonstrate financial need
    • Plan to enroll in an accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school by the fall of 2008.

The Gates Millennium Scholars program will select one thousand students this year as Gates Millennium Scholars.  Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

    • Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American
    • Are citizens, nationals, or legal permanent residents of the U.S.
    • Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted)
    • Will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree seeking, first year student
    • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities.
    • Meet the eligibility criteria for a Federal Pell Grant
    • Have all documents submitted by the deadline dates.

Jackson State University – High School/Community College Day

Jackson State University will host a High School/Community College Day this Saturday, October 6, 2007.  All students must attend in a group and be accompanied by an adult chaperon throughout the day – so you MUST SIGN UP IN MRS. ROSS’ OFFICE.  Mrs. Virginia Terry will meet you at 8:00 that morning in the parking lot at McDonald’s in Byram.  You must provide your own transportation.  When you arrive at JSU, you will be required to pay a $20.00 registration fee.  Thos fee will entitle you to participate in the campus-sponsored activities, lunch and a ticket to the football game.

REMINDERS-

Students who plan to take the test for the U.S. Senate Youth Program must have the applications postmarked by Friday, October 5th.  Please make sure you get a ticket from Mrs. Ross before you take the test on November 3rd.

Sun Trust Scholarship Sweepstakes

High school seniors can win a $1,000 scholarship for their first year expenses at an accredited college or private career school.  One winner will be chosen every two weeks from October 31, 2007 through May 15, 2008.

United States Senate Youth Program 2007-2008

Ole Miss – Fall Visit Day
